Moroccan baccalaureate and UK universities: direct entry or foundation?
Within a group of sixteen UK universities selected for this comparison, we found no published confirmation of direct entry on the Moroccan baccalaureate alone. What each one says, which foundation years accept you and at what mark, what the extra year costs — and a university outside the group that does publish direct entry.

For a student with the Moroccan baccalaureate, the question is not which grade a UK university asks for, but whether it accepts the diploma at all for year one. We found no published confirmation of direct entry on the Moroccan bac alone within the sixteen UK universities selected for this comparison, checked on 30 September 2026. Several explicitly require additional preparation; for others, the published position remains unclear. This is not a UK-wide rejection: other universities, such as Westminster, publish direct entry. For the universities below, the usual route is a one-year foundation programme, then the degree.
This page sets out what each university says, which foundation years accept you and at what mark, what the extra year costs, and the alternatives. It concerns the Moroccan baccalaureate (Diplôme du Baccalauréat, also called Baccalauréat de l’Enseignement Secondaire). If you are taking the French baccalaureate at a French lycée in Morocco, the rules are different: see French baccalaureate and UK universities.
University by university
| University | Moroccan bac for year one | Route the university offers |
|---|---|---|
| Oxford | “Not accepted” | A foundation year “may be accepted in certain circumstances”; Oxford recommends other qualifications |
| Cambridge | Morocco not listed: “likely” not accepted | No route published |
| Imperial | Morocco not in the table of accepted school-leaving qualifications | No route published |
| LSE | “isn’t acceptable as an entry qualification” | Other accepted international qualifications |
| UCL | No equivalence for the bac alone | One completed Licence year at a recognised Moroccan university with 16/20 (general Morocco guidance, minimum ABB-equivalent, 2026 entry); or UCL’s Undergraduate Preparatory Certificate (UPC) |
| King’s College London | “will not be considered for direct entry” | King’s International Foundation Programme |
| Warwick | “Warwick IFP required” | Warwick IFP; IB, A-levels, APs or French bac also considered |
| Edinburgh | “does not currently accept” it for direct entry | International Foundation Programme (one year) |
| St Andrews | A national school-leaving certificate must come with something else | Foundation, IB (36 to 38) or A-levels (AAB to A*A*A) |
| Durham | “not suitable for direct entry into year one” | Foundation (Durham International Study Centre) or another qualification |
| Exeter | Foundation must be completed first | International Study Centre foundation |
| Birmingham | “not normally eligible” without a foundation | Foundation pathway, 14/20 to enter |
| Manchester | Foundation required before an undergraduate course | INTO Manchester; integrated foundation year in Science and Engineering with 16/20, and 16 in maths and physics |
| Bath | No rule found: Morocco not listed | “You can still apply”; an International Foundation Year exists |
| Nottingham | No rule found: no Morocco page | International College (foundation) exists |
| Bristol | No rule found: the Morocco page does not mention the Moroccan bac | International Foundation Programme, described as preparation, not as compulsory |
“No rule found” means just that: the university does not publish a position on its pages. Before applying directly on the Moroccan bac to Bath, Nottingham or Bristol, write to their admissions team and keep the answer in writing.
Foundation years: entry mark, cost, progression
A foundation year is a one-year course (sometimes two or four terms) that prepares international students for year one. Some programmes are taught by universities, others by pathway providers. Bristol teaches its own IFP, with Kaplan as partner for applications and admissions. The study centres of Durham and Bath are run with Study Group, Exeter’s and Manchester’s with INTO, and Birmingham’s and Nottingham’s with Kaplan. Check separately who teaches the programme, who handles the application and which university recognises it. Where a programme has several streams, the table shows the business or economics one. The progression rule is what matters most: a guaranteed place if you reach the required grades is not the same as a “consideration”.
| Programme | Bac required | Fee | Progression, as published |
|---|---|---|---|
| Edinburgh IFP | 16/20, with 16 in required subjects | £29,600 (2026/27; 2027/28 not yet confirmed) | Guaranteed progression to your chosen degree if you achieve the grades in your offer |
| UCL UPC | 14/20 overall, 16 in each relevant subject | £28,000 (2026–27; 2027/28 not yet confirmed) | Guaranteed conditional offer on over 230 specified UCL degrees, if predicted to meet their requirements and with a relevant personal statement |
| St Andrews Year Zero (business) | 14.5/20, and 14.5 in relevant subjects | £29,085 (start 6 September 2027) | Progression to Economics and Financial Economics, Management or International Honours |
| Birmingham foundation pathway | 14/20 | from £24,480 (year label unclear) | Guaranteed if you meet the academic and English requirements |
| Durham ISC | average of 12 | £27,500 (2026/27; 2027/28 not yet confirmed) | Progression to Durham degrees with the required grades; “places may be limited” |
| Bath ISC | average of 12 | £25,250 (2026/27; 2027/28 not yet confirmed) | Guaranteed with the required progression grades (Bath’s own page) |
| Exeter ISC, nine-month course from 13 September 2027 | 12/20 | September 2027, nine-month programme: provisional fee not independently confirmed — ask Exeter/INTO for an itemised written quotation before accepting. The page also lists a compulsory £275 enrolment fee and £270–365 of textbooks | Guarantees entry, subject to the specified grades |
| Warwick IFP | not published | £27,150 (2026/27; 2027/28 not yet confirmed) | Guaranteed conditional offer of a Warwick place |
| King’s IFP | not published | £29,850 (year label unclear) | Guaranteed conditional offer or interview for most programmes |
| INTO Manchester (humanities and social sciences) | not stated for Morocco | £28,995 (2026/27; 2027/28 not yet confirmed) | Guaranteed offer with the required grades |
| Bristol IFP | not published | £26,900 (2026/27) | Guaranteed onto an agreed degree if you meet the requirements |
| Nottingham International College | not published | from £23,110 (2026–27; 2027/28 not yet confirmed) | Guaranteed place if you pass at the required level, with good attendance |
Two fee labels are unclear on the official pages: Birmingham’s partner shows £24,480 as both 2025–26 and 2026–27, and King’s shows 2026/27 above dates running to 2028. ISC means International Study Centre. Bristol’s 2027 course page already shows £27,975. Exeter: the study centre says its prices are provisional and reflect 2026/27 fees. Offers confirmed on or before 30 November 2026 keep the 2026/27 price in the offer letter; after that date, where fees have increased, offers are reissued at 2027/28 prices. Check your individual offer before paying. Each programme name links to its fees or entry page; read the progression page too, since “offer”, “interview” and “consideration” are not the same thing. Foundation years also set their own English requirement, generally lower than for the degree (from IELTS 5.0 to 6.0 overall on most pages we read; up to 7.0 for some UCL streams), and most applicants who are not British or Irish, and hold no other UK immigration status, will also need a Student visa. At St Andrews, all International Foundation applicants must submit a UKVI Secure English Language Test (SELT) as evidence of their English language ability before they can be made an unconditional offer.
What the extra year really costs
The foundation year is paid on top of the degree. Take the minimum living costs the Home Office asks you to show for a course outside London, for a visa application made on or after 30 November 2026 (which is when a 2027 applicant will apply): 9 × £1,203 = £10,827. The date of the application is what counts: applications made up to 29 November 2026 are still assessed at £1,171 a month outside London and £1,529 in London; from 30 November 2026 the figures are £1,203 and £1,570 (Statement of changes HC 584).
- Bath International Study Centre (2026/27 fee): £25,250 + £10,827 = about £36,100.
- Edinburgh IFP: £29,600 + £10,827 = about £40,400 — before a Scottish degree that usually lasts four years.
These sums combine tuition with the nine-month visa maintenance requirement that applies from 30 November 2026. They are not complete annual budgets. For a real budget, replace the maintenance figure with an itemised estimate of accommodation, food and transport for the actual number of months, then add travel, the visa fee (£558), the healthcare surcharge (£776 a year) and compulsory course charges separately. Then compare it with the cost of the alternatives below.
Alternatives to a separate UK foundation programme
- A university that publishes direct entry on the Moroccan bac. Outside our group of sixteen, the University of Westminster asks for a minimum average of 15/20 in the ECO, TGC, SVT, PC and STE streams, and 14/20 in Sciences Maths A and B, for Year 1. Course-specific and English requirements still apply. Other universities may publish similar rules: check their Morocco pages.
- French baccalaureate at a French lycée in Morocco. It is a different diploma, read under the France grids. Exeter and Manchester say explicitly that French-bac students in Morocco get direct entry. The switch is only realistic early — in Seconde, or before.
- IB or A-levels. St Andrews names them as the alternative (IB 36 to 38, A-levels AAB to A*A*A); Warwick considers them too. In Morocco, that means an international school, usually from the start of the two-year programme.
- One year of university in Morocco. UCL’s general Morocco guidance lists one completed Licence year at a recognised Moroccan university with 16/20 (“très bien”) as its minimum ABB-equivalent requirement for 2026 entry. Programme requirements may differ or be higher: confirm the requirement for your exact 2027 course. This costs no UK fees for that year, but the Licence must be in subjects relevant to the UCL degree.
- Manchester’s integrated foundation year in Science and Engineering, for students with 16/20 overall and 16 in maths and physics. It remains an additional preparatory year: it does not remove that year from the study plan.
Which route for which student
- Strong Moroccan bac (16/20 or more, 16 in the key subjects): Edinburgh’s IFP and UCL’s UPC are the most selective foundation routes, with published progression rules. UCL’s Licence route is a serious alternative if you would rather stay in Morocco for one more year.
- Good bac (14 to 15.9): UCL’s UPC if your relevant subjects are at 16, St Andrews Year Zero (14.5), Birmingham (14).
- Bac around 12 to 13.9: Durham, Bath and Exeter study centres, which accept an average of 12.
- Want to start year one straight away: look outside the sixteen, at universities that publish direct entry — Westminster from 14/20 (Sciences Maths) or 15/20 (other streams).
These are published requirements, not admission probabilities: meeting them does not guarantee an offer.
- Still in Seconde or Première and set on the UK: compare the cost of a foundation year with that of switching to a French lycée, the IB or A-levels — and decide now, not in Terminale.
Whatever the route, check the progression grades of the degree you want, not only the entry mark of the foundation. Foundation programmes may require an application directly to the university or its pathway provider rather than through UCAS — Nottingham’s International College, for example, takes applications through Kaplan Pathways, and Bristol’s IFP through Kaplan. Check the application channel, deadline, required documents and deposit conditions on the exact programme page before applying. For UCAS applications to year one, see our UCAS guide for international students. Our French guides on the equivalence of the Moroccan bac and foundation year or International Year One go into more detail.
